My father, Robert Dennis, was in the US Lighthouse Service in the 1930’s.  He served on a tender out of Bristol and took care of the buoys for the main channel and delivered coal to the lighthouses from Fall River.  This took him, then to the North Atlantic convoys, then into WWII serving on an attack transport in the US Coast Guard.  He was in the Invasion of Normandy, Italy, Iwo Jima, Okinawa.
