She and her sister, now Madeline Wright, grew up near the old lighthouse. In 1932, erosion threatened to undermine the building. It was tom down and replaced by a metal cylinder light.

It was heartbreaking to have the old lighthouse go. Its walls were 22 inches thick at the base, yet it was hardly 30 feet tall. From its commanding position overlooking the bay, it was one of the most familiar landmarks along the shore. Inside and out it was an immaculate white, having been kept that way even up to its last hours. The lens—it was beautiful, like diamonds! — was transferred to the new tower in one day. The light continued its operation that night as it had for 106 years.

Joseph Bakken and Family. ca 1915. baby May is on her mother's knee, and Madeline is standing.
</text>

                <text>
This cast iron vent ball is typical of the standard vent balls used on Lighthouses. The purpose of the vent ball was to allow circulation of air up through the light tower through the lantern room and out through the bottom of the vent ball. A series of small holes covered with wire mesh allowed warm air to exit the lighthouse through the bottom of the vent ball. The circulation of air through the light tower was instrumental In keeping the tower dry and free of moisture. When kerosene or oil lamps were used the ventilation allowed fumes from the lamps to safely exit the lantern room. The spike at the top of the vent ball served as a lightning ground rod for the light tower.

This vent ball was removed from Hudson City Light, New York in 1992 and replaced with a new cast iron vent ball. The interior of the vent ball and housing had begun to deteriorate requiring its replacement.

Hudson City Light was built in 1874 and it is believed that this is the original vent ball. The lighthouse marks the entrance to Hudson City and Athens, New York on the East bank of the Hudson River.
</text>

Containers of oil from the oi house needed to be arried up a 49 step circular staircase and 2 ladders to the top of the tower daily, the lantern wicks had to be adjusted and trimmed and the fog signal apparatus regularly maintained.

The Lighthouse was an important part of the Jamestown community drawing people when there was a storm or an emergency. Because of so many visitors, life was not lonely, orten quite hectic.
Being a Keeper's Wife posed many challenges in a harsh but beautiful environment.</text>
