The lens can be open to allow visitors to see inside. Touching the glass prisms is prohibited Notes on the Fresnel Lens This type of lens was developed in 1823 by a Frenchman named Augustin Fresnel(pronounced frey - NEL).The arrangement of the prisms bends the light rays thus making the beam more intense and visible further out to sea. Typical lenses in use before the Fresnel lens lost nearly 97 % of the light from a flame, and a flame with a reflector behind it still lost about 83 % of its light.The Fresnel lens was able to capture all but about 17 % of its light.At one time all the lighthouses in America were equipped with a Fresnel lens. The size of a Fresnel lens is designated by order: a 1 st order lens is the largest with an average height of about 12 feet.The 6 th order lens is the smallest in height, about 1.5 feet tall. Mr. Chellis was the lighthouse keeper at Beavertail Station from January 1938 to 1945. He was there during the devastating hurricane of 1938 and lost a daughter due to that storm. Thompson was one of five people drowned when the 1938 hurricane swept away the keeper's house where they had gathered for protection from the storm. As a boy, Charles Homan lived on Prudence Island with his grandparents, the Thompsons. Charles had happy memories of his time at Sandy Point. In summer we always had visitors, and it was the duty of the keeper to show them the light. The lens was very beautiful French crystal and it was quite something to see. highly polished and well taken care of, and the brass, too. I can remember my grandfather saying. ‘We will polish the brass'—and the 'we' was me! Grandfather was in the Norwegian merchant marine and was wrecked three times, decided he'd had enough and came to the United States. He had a friend in the Lighthouse Service on Staten Island who got him a job lighting the lamps at Hell's Gate in New York. Next he was assistant keeper at Sakonnet Point, then Borden Flats in Fall River, and finally Prudence Island. A typical day was like this: First, you were up before S o'clock. When daylight came you extinguished the light, trimmed the wick, got every thing ready for the next night, took care of the tower, polished the lens, and put the cover on the light. Then you went about your duties of painting, maintaining, and general chores. Just like on the farm, your work is never done. Then we’d do what we had on the side, pull a lobster pot or some trawling. Toward evening you'd just reverse what you did in the morning. And if you had a fog coming... .This I could never understand, my grandfalher could feel if the fog was going to set in at maybe 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning, and in that case he’d retire very early. He would set an alarm, but nine times out of ten he would be up before the alarm went off. Then the bell would start; the sound was very nice, much better than the hooter we have now. Peter Lee applied to become keeper in order to free a younger man to enlist in the Union Army. His daughter Ella was nine at the time, the third of six children. In later years Ella liked to tell stories of those days to her granddaughter. Margaret Lee Causey, of Newport. The family moved to Beavertail in a sailboat, horse in the bow, and household goods in the stern. Their new home was more than three miles down a badly-rutted road, with many gates to open and close along the way. The children worked hard, cleaning and sweeping, helping with the garden and animals, and assisting their mother in the kitchen. Although life was rugged, Ella’s memories were of a happy time. When winter storms raged, waves crashed and the wind howled, the children would enjoy the coziness of their house at Beavertail knowing that the light their father tended made the waters safer for those at sea. Identifier An unambiguous reference to the resource within a given context 211 Title A name given to the resource Warwick Neck Lighthouse Description An account of the resource May Chrietzbert was born in the Warwick Neck lighthouse in 1913, shortly after her father, Jorgen Bakken, became keeper. She and her sister, now Madeline Wright, grew up near the old lighthouse. In 1932, erosion threatened to undermine the building. It was tom down and replaced by a metal cylinder light. It was heartbreaking to have the old lighthouse go. Its walls were 22 inches thick at the base, yet it was hardly 30 feet tall. From its commanding position overlooking the bay, it was one of the most familiar landmarks along the shore. Inside and out it was an immaculate white, having been kept that way even up to its last hours. The lens—it was beautiful, like diamonds! — was transferred to the new tower in one day.
