The lens can be open to allow visitors to see inside. Touching the glass prisms is prohibited Notes on the Fresnel Lens This type of lens was developed in 1823 by a Frenchman named Augustin Fresnel(pronounced frey - NEL).The arrangement of the prisms bends the light rays thus making the beam more intense and visible further out to sea. Typical lenses in use before the Fresnel lens lost nearly 97 % of the light from a flame, and a flame with a reflector behind it still lost about 83 % of its light.The Fresnel lens was able to capture all but about 17 % of its light.At one time all the lighthouses in America were equipped with a Fresnel lens. The size of a Fresnel lens is designated by order: a 1 st order lens is the largest with an average height of about 12 feet.The 6 th order lens is the smallest in height, about 1.5 feet tall. You may want to invite visitors to observe the height of the light from the lens. Then open the door of the lens and show them the lighted bulb. The magnification is due to the optics of the lens.The larger bulb inside the lens(1000 watts) was used in the tower and is too bright to put on display here because of safety reasons. Therefore, a 20 watt bulb is used for demonstration purposes. Title A name given to the resource Vent Ball with Spire Description An account of the resource This cast iron vent ball is typical of the standard vent balls used on Lighthouses. The purpose of the vent ball was to allow circulation of air up through the light tower through the lantern room and out through the bottom of the vent ball. A series of small holes covered with wire mesh allowed warm air to exit the lighthouse through the bottom of the vent ball. The circulation of air through the light tower was instrumental In keeping the tower dry and free of moisture. When kerosene or oil lamps were used the ventilation allowed fumes from the lamps to safely exit the lantern room. The spike at the top of the vent ball served as a lightning ground rod for the light tower. This vent ball was removed from Hudson City Light, New York in 1992 and replaced with a new cast iron vent ball. The interior of the vent ball and housing had begun to deteriorate requiring its replacement. Hudson City Light was built in 1874 and it is believed that this is the original vent ball. The lighthouse marks the entrance to Hudson City and Athens, New York on the East bank of the Hudson River. Title A name given to the resource Funck-Heap Lamp Description An account of the resource The Funck-Heap lamp, introduced in 1892, became the standard lamp used with every 4th order Fresnel Lens in America. A Lamp such as this one probably provided the light source for the Fresnel lens on display in the center of this room before it was electrified in 1932. The Funck-Heap lamp featured a circular wick flame spreading button in the center, which helped maintain a constant flame size and shape. The wick was fed through a screw thread on the wick-carrying tube. When the Conimicut Light in Warwick was electrified in 1960, the Keeper at Conimicut gave this lamp to a local Doctor. It was passed down to the Doctor’s descendants and finally after a chance meeting between a BLMA Board Member and a member of the Reilly family, was loaned to the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum for use as a museum display. This lamp is solid brass and is 15" tall with a 7"diameter base.
