Last fall the BLMA board of directors voted to increase individual membership dues and revise the term of yearly membership to coincide with the calendar year (January to January).
Check your mailing label. If you do not see a -98- above or after your name, then your Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association membership has now expired. (Unless, of course, you are a Lifetime Member.)
New memberships or renewals received in 1997 will not expire until December 31, 1998. So if you renew now, you will receive an additional 6 months of membership.
Renewing now sounds like an excellent idea! Your membership support is vital to the existence of the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum. Membership dollars help fund the upkeep of the building as well as new exhibits and research. We are an organization staffed and operated entirely by volunteers. We depend on and are grateful to our members and volunteers who give so generously of their time and money.
On the last page of this newsletter you will find a BLMA membership enrollment form. Please take the time to renew and to keep the light shining.
When our dedicated volunteers take on the fun responsibility of staffing the museum for a morning or afternoon, they must be prepared to meet .. and greet .. the world. Curious and interesting visitors from around the globe walk through the museum doors every day. BLMA volunteers are good will ambassadors dispensing tidbits about the museum, the lighthouse and its glorious surroundings. They give directions, recommend a favorite restaurant, confer on the weather, impart some old New England wisdom and all in all extend a warm and much appreciated greeting.
Add to this the job of handling the merchandise and sales in the museum shop and it's a full and enjoyable volunteer experience.
Many thanks to our on-site BLMA volunteers.
The doors could not open without you.
The keynote speaker for the annual meeting is Anthony S. Nicolosi, Director of the Naval War College Museum. Mr. Nicolosi is an award winning historian of the naval presence in Narragansett Bay.
Mr. Nicolosi's illustrated presentation will describe some of the innovative exhibit techniques and methods that are employed by small and not highly funded museums in order to achieve a modicum of success and professional reputation. He will also explain the role the museum plays in the educational mission of the Naval War College and the acknowledged corporate memory of the naval presence in Narragansett Bay.
Prior to the presentation by Anthony Nicolosi, there will be a short business meeting and election of officers and directors. Refreshments will follow.
We hope to see you there.
